An inventive former runner designs unique alternative to safety pins for securing race numbers to clothing – No more pins, No more holes!

Special feature report by Don Hale.

An award-winning sports enthusiast, who is also a creative designer and inventor, has finally solved an age-old problem dating back more than a century, to finding a new and realistic alternative to using safety pins, whilst trying to attach a competitor’s race number to clothing.

The problem of athletes still using old-fashioned safety pins in this modern age at major athletics, cycling, triathlon, or sporting events, and the potential damage caused by them, was discussed live on BBC television recently by former Olympic champions Steve Cram and Michael Johnson during the World Athletics Championships in America in July, yet they failed to appreciate that a viable alternative IS NOW available!

Exciting innovations

Ex-runner Mike Drage from his Shrewsbury based firm Eventclip, says he has spent over a decade developing numerous BibClip designs and models, and claims his creations will eliminate that precise problem. He seems now determined to make all sportsmen and women, and media commentators, more aware of his new, exciting, and innovative creations.

Mike, like me, was surprised to hear experienced athletes arguing on TV about the ridiculous use of safety pins at this highest level, who also accepted the fact that pins were no longer the answer for attaching race numbers to running vests, wet suits, triathlon, or cycling kit etc.

They admitted that something else was urgently needed to prevent holes, or continual damage to expensive kit, and additionally highlighted the potential problems of using small pins that buckle, or could stab your fingers or chest, when trying to attach race or competition numbers to sports clothing, or when trying to push the pins through a tough waterproofed bib.

Pin-less race number fastener

Mike has developed his special Snap-Lock BibClips, which are made with recycled plastic and are so easy to use and can quickly attach your race/event number to your top. They are lightweight, attractive, and highly efficient, and prevent them from flapping, or tearing like pins.

They work on most sports kit and lightweight materials, and are far better than magnets, and will not create any further damage to your top. The BibClips are a pin-less race number fastener that is quite secure, and lock together using either side of your top without any concern.

Guinea pig at championship race

I acted as a guinea pig last week at two championship road races in Wales, and I can confirm that they did exactly what they said on the tin. I fitted the four BibClips in seconds, and despite a gusty wind, and my initial attempts to shake, or pull at the race numbers, to see if I could dislodge them, they thankfully remained extremely secure and comfortable. I also won a gold and silver medal!

Personalised and branded fasteners

Mike runs a small English production company, and over recent times, he has created hundreds of exciting outer cover designs, and he also offers personalised or branded number fasteners. I came across his work quite by chance whilst researching similar options to the safety pin, and with reference to the TV debate.

All the EventClip creations can be branded or personalised, but Mike already has a vast range to choose from on his website to brighten your race day, ranging from some stunning and unique Animal designs to several amusing Emoticons, Fantasy, Humour, Keep Calm, Drinks, Cities; Running, Cycling or Triathlon clubs; and Charity logos.

I was staggered to find that much of Mike’s fascinating study of this frustrating problem lay unknown to so many for so long in the UK. And although he has now patented his unique design ideas, he admits that some of his protected designs are already beginning to appear illegally on social media platforms in the United States and the Far East.

Mike’s designs are compact, lightweight, attractive, and have small-bevelled backs that are guaranteed not to rub. They are made in the UK and will immediately Snap-Lock, so they won’t come adrift during a race in any weather, and they are totally re-usable for ever and a day!

The inventor says, “NO MORE PINS, NO MORE HOLES, and he claims that any small dimples that may initially appear on clothing will soon disappear, and will wash, iron, or stretch out. He also warned against any cheap imitations, and criticised magnets, which he says might fall off, get knocked about, or could even interfere with electronic race number chips.

Positive reviews on social media – but most stock only available on company website.

Mike confirmed: “The products have received hundreds of positive reviews on Amazon, and all BibClips are reusable and are made, printed, and packed, in the UK with recycled plastic and supplied in a reusable sealed bag.

“And unlike safety pins and magnets imported from China, with large carbon footprints, which are environmentally unfriendly, due to the production processes, and packaging often failing, they can also damage the users’ kit, or lose valuable time in attaching.

“Race numbers are legally required for use in competitions and carry the competitor’s medical details on reverse, in case of an accident or emergency.”

*I thought you said RUM.

There are NO other Snap-Lock products legally available on the market.

After trying these new SNAP-LOCKS BIBCLIPS, I would highly recommend a trial and accept Mike’s view that they are ideal for individual athletes, sports clubs, event organisers, sponsors, companies, and charities.

Won three industry design awards for Snap-Lock BibClips

Mike has so far collected three prestigious industry awards in recent times as the winner of the Running Awards Best Accessory and his latest designs are very colourful, efficient, and our proving popular with many and varied sportspeople.
