The annual Nick Beer 10k race proved a hit once more with a massive 967 athletes completing a tough course from outside Venue Cymru and around the Great Orme before returning to Llandudno’s spectacular promenade, where spectators gave each entrant a warm welcome on a rather cool and breezy day.
Visiting athlete Hamish Morton (Cambridge & Coleridge AC) was the first finisher overall in just 34 minutes and 55 seconds, and he was the 1st MSen, but he was one of four elite runners who ran away from the main pack and they all dipped under the magic 36-minute mark.
*Menai T&F athlete Steffan Sayer (*above) finished second in the Nick Beer 10k.
Steffan Sayer (Menai T&F) was the runner-up with a great display in 35.06, and he won his M40 cat, whilst Prestatyn RC member Stephen Skates was third in 35.30, and he won his M45 age cat, whilst Huw Gwynn (Eryri Harriers) was fourth in 35.45.
Despite the breezy conditions around the Orme, the first twenty-three runners ran under 40 minutes with less than a minute separating the first four finishers in a fast-paced dash to the line. The first female finisher (25th overall) was Emma Price (Wrexham AAC) in 40.26, with Oliver Adelaide second in 43.53, and Mared Llywelyn (Hebog) third in 44.45. They were all in the same FSen age cat.
*North Wales Road Runners only entered four members as the club was involved in supplying sufficient volunteers and marshals for the race organisers Always Aim High, but Will Williams enjoyed a solid run in 35th place in 41.40, and he was 3rd in his M50 age cat. Paul Aubert was 124th in 46.53, and Steve Poupart acted as a guide for partially sighted athlete Daniel Owens and the pair obviously ran the course together in 135/136th places and shared the exact time of 53.25.
*GOG Triathlon entered thirteen members with Aled Hughes 10th in 38.24: Daniel Wellings 37th in 41.55, Bleddyn Evans 127th in 46.00, and Sam Evans was their first female athlete in 325th place in 53.41.
*Porth Eirias Runners (*pictured above) had so many remarkable entrants, with Gareth Catherall their first finisher in 407th place in 54.24, with Elwyn Evans 494th in 58.02, and Tal Michael next in 65.36.

Some other local runners worthy of mention include: Nic Brook (Eryri Harriers) 15th in 38.52, and he was 2nd in his M50 age cat, whilst Iain Burgess was in top form and he was 16th in 39.03.
And congratulations to husband and wife runners Tristan and Kelly Owen, who ran with team Tom Owen, and Tristan recorded a good time of 52.30 in 312th place, whilst Kelly was delighted to finish her first 10k so well in 65.09; and well done to Rachel Morris who ran the 10k as part of her London Marathon preparation in 79.49.

Report by Don Hale. https://donhaleblog.blogspot.com Twenty-four members of NWRRC took part in the annual Christmas club handicap race, which this year was staged from the Rhos on Sea clock tower to the renovated far end of the promenade and back over a 4.5-mile course. Well organised with times recorded and verified by Carla Green and Elizabeth Driscoll , with support from other members, the handicap rules this time included each runner having to hand in their watches and mobile phones, and the need to predict their finishing times, so that no one knew their exact pace, or whether their estimated times were likely to be accurate, until they actually reached the finish line. The event, which is in its 33rd year, has previously been run by North Wales Road Runners, and Always Aim High Events are now proud to add this fantastic race to our community events.
This not-for-profit event will continue to support local charities as well as the North Wales Road Runners Club.
Starting on the iconic Victorian promenade in Llandudno, the route takes runners around the awe-inspiring Great Orme with its stunning views of Eryri (Snowdonia), Anglesey and beyond.

Running alongside the event, there will be a 1k Fun Run, organised St David’s Hospice (Llandudno).

The race starts on the beautiful North Shore of the Llandudno Promenade outside the Imperial Hotel. You’ll run past the iconic pier and onto the Great Orme itself.
With sea views on one side and towering cliffs on the other, you surely won’t notice the incline under your legs in this first section!
At the far end of the Great Orme is the ‘Rest And Be Thankful’ cafe, which marks you’re close to the halfway point. No time to rest, but get ready to be thankful because the wonderful flying descent is just ahead!
You’ll flow down the road towards West Shore enjoying incredible views of Conwy Castle and Anglesey ahead and to your right. At 8km you’ll arrive back in Llandudno and run along the historic Victorian streets that will take you back to the Promenade and the Finish Line.

North Wales Road Runners had eight club members involved in the popular Nick Beer 10k race last Sunday and celebrated with two veteran age category victories amongst a bumper entry of 627 club and social runners.
The event, named in honour of a former NWRRC athlete, was well organised by Always Aim High, and followed a picturesque but very challenging course, which started from Llandudno promenade and around the Great Orme and back, and included over forty club members acting as marshalls and willing volunteers.

Harry Driscoll was the first club runner home with an excellent run finishing in 26th place in 39 minutes and 38 seconds. He was followed by veteran Steve Gardner who won his Over-60 age cat in 50th place in a chip time of 41.33, and Steve Roberts was back to his best in 132nd place in 48.18 and 5th in his Over-55 cat, whilst master vet Barrie Wells ran well to win his Over-70 age cat in 229th place in 52.16.
Newcomer Phillip Moss was 261st in 53.20, whilst Sarah Jones and Daniel Hennell ran together and both enjoyed good performances with Sarah 286th in 54.01, and Daniel was just one place and one second behind, and Rachel Morris was pleased with her performance, which she used as part of her marathon training plan and finished well in 560th place in 1.12.09.

After the race Steve Roberts said: “When I first ran this 10km race 40-years ago, it was called the Speakeasy 10km,and is now known as the Nick Beer 10k. I first ran it in 1984 in 41.10, and today, I ran it in 48.18, so not too bad for someone nearly 60-years young Lol.”

And Rachel Morris added: “I may run the Great Orme every week, but that was tough today with the wind pushing against me on the way up, but I enjoyed it. The Marshalls were fantastic, and a great race supported by my own running club.”

*The 10k race was won by Simon Cole (GOG Triathlon) in a fast time of 33.55, and he also won his Over-40 age cat. He was one of four outstanding club athletes who pushed the pace all the way around with just twenty-one seconds separating the next three runners.
James Yarwood (Wrexham AAC), eventually held onto the runners-up spot, finishing 2nd overall, and winning his Open-Senior cat in 35.16. And Themis Bower (Pontypridd Roadents AC), was only eight-seconds behind James in 35.24, and he finished 2nd in the same age cat, whilst Lloyd Williams (Cybi Striders), came 4th in 35.37, and narrowly missed out a prestigious podium place by a further nine-seconds!
Emma Alofs (Cybi Striders) was the first female finisher in 41.15, and she won her F-Sen age cat, with Anna Mathew 2nd in 42.29, and Emily Pegg (Rossendale Harriers), 3rd in 45.17. The latter two runners were also 2nd and 3rd in the same age cat as Emma.

For next year’s (2023) running of the famous Nick Beer 10k race in Llandudno, the previous race directors from North Wales Road Runners, John and Kay Hatton, who have successfully supervised this event for over 23-years, have finally given over the supervision and control of this popular event to the new race organisers Always Aim High.
We have published their preview and race details and can confirm that the next Nick Beer race will be held on Sunday 12th February 2023 (12 noon start) in Llandudno. And our thanks must go as usual to all our local sponsors who have generously agreed to continue their support and include – Tesco (Llandudno Junction), Premier Toyota, Tom Owen and Sons, MKM Builders Merchants, RS Scaffolding, Colwyn Bay Seed Supplies Ltd and Subway.’

Living with hydrocephalus, Nick sadly passed away after finishing the Vyrnwy half marathon in September 1992. He was just 27 years old. He joined NWRRC from Colwyn Bay A.C and his smile soon made him lots of friends. He was there at every race. He tried and tried until his improvements staggered us all, and you could always rely on that smile at the finishing post.
We all need occasional laughter to make us feel good, and Nick provided that in abundance. His presence was welcome, pervasive, selflessly giving and never asking the price.

Nick Beer 10k gave massive fundraising boost to charities…2022 event.

The 30th anniversary run of the popular Nick Beer 10k memorial race proved another huge success last Sunday and gave a massive and very welcome fundraising boost for a variety of charities.
This spectacular annual event attracted nearly six-hundred finishers and recorded a host of excellent results despite the blustery conditions, including top female athlete Sara Willhoit, who smashed the women’s course record!
Apart from many runners enjoying this race and returning to action after many turbulent months due to Covid-19 restrictions, the race and its associated Fun Run also raised thousands of pounds for St David’s Hospice and the Llandudno Lions Club charities, plus a host of individual good causes.
Following a challenging out and back course from Llandudno promenade and around the Great Orme via West Shore, runners from all over the UK were welcomed back to this extraordinary race, which commemorated its 30th anniversary of running for the late NWRCC athlete Nick Beer.
The overall event was won by race favourite Daniel Kashi (Sale Harriers) in just 32 minutes 55 seconds, who celebrated a runaway victory, finishing more than a minute ahead of his nearest rivals Ryan Davies and Luke Northall from Wrexham, who both finished within seven seconds of each other in 33.52 and 33.59 respectively.
The women’s race was equally competitive with Shrewsbury athlete Sara Willhoit claiming an amazing new course record of 35.35, ahead of local rivals Amie Bagnall (now with Cheshire Dragons) in 39.16, and Rachel Shipley(Abergele Harriers) in 40.42.
Other top local runners included Simon Cole (GOG Triathlon) who ran extremely well and finished 6th and was the 1st MV40 in 34.30, with Nic Brook (Eryri), additionally winning his MV45 age cat in 21st place in 37.49, whilst Prestatyn RC MV85 veteran Roger Harrison-Jones finished well in 66.56.
Event hosts North Wales Road Runners entered seven athletes with dozens of other members scattered around the course, and on the promenade, volunteering as marshalls,’ and support crew.
Richard Eccles was the first NWRRC man back home in 32nd place overall in 39.24, and he also won his MV55-59 age cat. Harry Driscoll was another runner in fine form finishing 43rd in 41.01, with Steve Bozier close behind and running on fire in 45th place in 41.29.
Mia Morris however was the star of the club team with the teenager easily winning her FU20 age cat with a magnificent run in 55.27 and knocked about five minutes off her previous best, and she was more than five minutes ahead of her nearest rival. Mia finished in 283rd place overall and was the 56th female athlete.
Sue Smith also turned in a gritty performance and finished 370th overall and was 106th female in 61.14, whilst her husband Mike Smith finished 463rd in 68.25, with club newcomer Gwennan Charlton enjoying a good run in 418th place overall, and 134th female in 63.53.
Plaudits were given to race directors John and Kay Hatton, Carla Green, Tony Gibson, Mike Hayton, and to all the management team, in addition to race commentator and MC Ian Turner, all the sponsors, volunteers and marshalls, and race recorders TDL.
After the race, an exhausted John Hatton confirmed: ‘What a day, it went off absolutely brilliant especially with the women’s record being broken. I am very tired now, but very proud of what we have achieved with the race. The feedback has been amazing.
‘It was a great atmosphere at the start and finish and the promenade was full of spectators. The weather improved and it was nothing like it was forecast, but the runners said it was very windy from 5 to 7 K.
‘And thanks to all our local sponsors – Tesco, Premier Toyota, Tom Owen and Sons, MKM Builders Merchants, RS Scaffolding, Colwyn Bay Seed Supplies Ltd and Subway.’
*The 1k Family Fun Run for St David’s Hospice was also well attended prior to the main race, and John Hatton confirmed that 4-year-old Alayah Thompson-Jones, who took part in the junior dash, additionally raised an incredible personal Hospice bonus of £416.00.
*The overall male winners included: Daniel Kashi (Sale Harriers. 1st SenM in 32.55, 2nd Ryan Davies (Wrexham) 33.52, and 3rd Luke Northall (Wrexham) 33.59. Female results: 1st Sara Willhoit (Shrewsbury) 35.35 and 1st FS; 2nd Amie Bagnall (Cheshire Dragons), and 2nd FS in 39.16; and 3rd Rachel Shipley (Abergele) and 3rd FS in 40.42.

Nick Beer race 2021 raised £2,500 for St David’s Hospice and Lions charities…Update by Don Hale.
The re-arranged 2021 Nick Beer 10k race in Llandudno helped to raise over £2,500 for local charitable causes. Event organisers North Wales Road Runners confirmed this week that donations including £900 from the 10k race income, and £500 from the children’s fun run have been handed over to St David’s Hospice, making a total of £1,400; with a further £1,100 donated to the Lions Club of Llandudno for their designated charities.

This annual event always attracts many hundreds of runners of mixed ages and abilities from across the UK, and beyond, to enjoy the scenic splendours of a hilly but picturesque course around the Great Orme.
Starting and finishing on Llandudno promenade, opposite the Imperial Hotel, this next race will be the 30th annual run to help commemorate the life of a well-known former local athlete, Nick Beer, who sadly passed away in 1992, aged just 27, after eventually losing his battle with hydrocephalus.
Race officials John and Kay Hatton from event organisers North Wales Road Runners (NWRRC), have supervised this major 10k run for over twenty-years, and advise early entries so that runners will not be disappointed as they believe the race target will be easily reached following previous pandemic restrictions.
John also explained that athletes will be able to collect the third and final part of a unique three-medal set on completing this exciting 10k run.
He also provided some interesting background to the origin of this race and explained: ‘Nick joined NWRRC from Colwyn Bay AC, and his smile soon made lots of friends. He was there at every race. He tried and tried until his improvements staggered us all, and you could always rely on that smile at the finishing post.
‘We all need occasional laughter to make us feel good, and Nick provided that in abundance. His presence was welcome, pervasive, selflessly giving, and never asking the price. Nick was living with hydrocephalus and passed away after finishing the Lake Vyrnwy half-marathon race in September 1992.
